L’Art Décoratif Théatral Moderne, Gontcharova & Larionov 1919

Gontcharova and Larionov were close associates of Diaghilev and two of the protagonists in the stylistic revolution that his Ballets Russes inspired in Paris beginning in 1909. Together they produced this wonderful collection of designs in conjunction with a show of their work at the Galerie Sauvage in 1918. Showing a wide range of influences from Russian popular art to early cubism, the portfolio surveys their creations for such successful productions as “Le Coq d’Or” and “Kikimora”. This is an extremely important document for the evolution of design and the performing arts alike. The album contains 14 color illustrations, of which 6 are pochoir and 5 of the illustrations are double plates. Charles Martin was a preeminent illustrator, graphic artist, and set and costume designer of the art deco era. “He studied at the Montpellier Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the Académie Julian and the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Crmon. He was a prolific illustrator, working for multiple publications and illustrating a large number of books. He exhibited at the SA and the Salond des Humoristes, and designed sets and costumes for a number of plays, revues and ballets. He also designed furniture, fashions and wallpapers for several decorators, including André Groult, for whom he executed painted panels and screens. He was an exceptional draughtsman, and executed a number of erotic drawings and watercolors.

He was a prolific illustrator, working for La Gazette du Bon Ton, Le Journal de Dames et des Modes, Feuillets d’Art, Fémina, Le Sourire, Le Rire, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair, in addition to illustrating a large number of books.

This particular costume design in pencil and watercolor shows an elegant woman in draped white gown is signed and titled “Mannequin Blanc”

Following Poiret’s catalogs illustrated by Iribe and Lepape, the designer Marcelle Demay commissioned noted fashion illustrator Charles Martin to document her 1912 hat collection. This charming album features four original pochoir-colored illustrations of hats by Martin—one each for spring, summer, autumn and winter—and five photogravures of the actress Berthe Cerny wearing Demay’s creations. In a short preface, Demay explains that her collection was designed with the concept of “the typical Parisian woman of 1912″ in mind; as Berthe Cerny created the role of “La Parisienne” at the Comédie Française that year, she was the perfect model.

Paul Morand’s four tales are interpreted by French painter and illustrator Janine Aghion in 13 blue and gold and 5 sepia designs, typical of the artist’s sensuous and linear style. Active in Paris during the second and third decades of the twentieth century, Aghion is considered one of the finest illustrators working for fashion great Paul Poiret and others.

Wiener Werkstatte Woodcuts, Uchatius 1906

Mitzi (Marie) Uchatius, born in Vienna in 1882, studied under Otto Czeschka and became an engraver of renown, particularly recognized for her renditions of animals.

This exquisite self-published album (possibly classwork) showcases her talent, featuring six woodcuts in the Viennese Secessionist style, depicting a sheep, a bear, a horse, a dog, a fox and deer. Each print is signed in pencil.
